All of my work revolves around my exploration of the intricacies and complexities that exist within the relationship between our species and the rest of the natural world. My most recent body of sculpture, a series called “Dominance and Affection”, deals specifically with our relationship to our pets. It seems, as though, today, the most intimate connection we maintain with nature is with those animals we single out and choose to keep as companions. The intense love and affection we feel for these creatures does not erase the fact that the success of the relationship lies in our complete domination over all aspects of their existence. These creatures, sculpted in porcelain with its precious and fragile nature are presented caged and contained. “Queen Captiva” peers out from inside her princess canopy meant to imply her status as a precious pet, yet her containment in oppressive black steel portrays a mournful reality. “Space-Saving Gerbil Tower” is a somewhat humorous jab at the lengths we go to keep and control creatures, no matter whether we have the room to house them or not. The tower of individual cages, stacked, one on top of the other, each containing a single gerbil, references furniture designed to maximize storage in small spaces. Space is saved on another level by denying these rapidly reproducing creatures the ability to intermingle at all. Finally, “Starter Pet Adaptation” speaks of the ways in which animals adapt to their new status as pets. The hermit crab, a typical “starter pet” for the human child is here, adapting to its new environment by moving into various childhood toys. Housed in cages referencing baby cribs they also raise questions about the way in which pets are becoming stand-ins for our children.
